3 MAY 2015: LionsXII head coach Fandi Ahmad was pleased with the way his players came from behind to defeat Sime Darby on Saturday evening.
The LionsXII had trailed to a first-half Fahrul Razi stunner, but fought back with two brilliantly taken goals from Firdaus Kasman and Gabriel Quak in the second half.
The result means that Fandi’s charges have won away in the league for the first time this season, and twice in a row as well.
With 13 points right now, the LionsXII are just five points behind league leaders PDRM FA.
“I’m proud of the boys who made a comeback,” Fandi said after the game.
“We had some difficulties in the beginning of the game, and also had to make some changes at the last minute because (Khairul) Nizam had to pull out due to a hamstring strain.
“I thought the makeshift defence was quite good today. They gave us a scare early in the first half but we fought very hard in the second half.
“We never gave up and in the second half we came back. We wanted to win this game because of our positive mindset from the last game.
“I thought we did quite well and we deserved it in the second half, where we could have scored more goals.”
Fandi however, conceded that he feared the worst initially, as the makeshift defence of Raihan Rahman, Izzdin Shafiq, Zulfahmi Arifin and Hafiz Sujad struggled.
“It’s definitely the concentration that’s key, but I thought Sime Darby did very well,” Fandi explained.
“They played a lot of long balls to their striker Reinaldo.
“He has a big physique and can knock down balls so we couldn’t cope with that because our centre-backs were not that tall and most of the time we were caught ball watching and made a lot of mistakes.
“So far the last few games have been good, we’ve been improving with a makeshift team, and we are very happy to get these three points.”
